Renowned Medical Journalist Dan Hurley to Speak about DIABETES RISING
"Diabetes Rising"
TUESDAY, MARCH 2, 2010 at 7:00 PM
@ Wellesley Booksmith, 82 Central Street, Wellesley MA 02482
In DIABETES RISING: How a Rare Disease Became a Modern Pandemic, and What to Do About It,
Dan Hurley, award-winning medical writer and type 1 diabetic, takes readers to the
frontlines of the diabetes crisis, and delivers the first investigative account of the
disease's alarming rise and the quest for its true causes and cures. Pushing past the
worn-out conventional wisdom about a disease that is now ten times more common than it
was a hundred years ago—and projected to affect one in three Americans— Diabetes Rising
reveals how a small band of passionate, fiercely determined scientists, advocates and
public-policy strategists are struggling against orthodoxy to bring diabetes to its knees.

Jeff Garlin
"My Footprints"
Saturday, March 6 2 PM
@ Borders Back Bay (511 Boylston St., Boston; 617-236-1444)
Jeff Garlin is probably best known as Larry David's cheerful manager on
the Emmy-nominated HBO show, Curb Your Enthusiasm. In his new book,
MY FOOTPRINT: Carrying the Weight of the World (Gallery Books;
hardcover; on-sale February 23, 2010; $25.00), Jeff chronicles his
year-long journey to reduce both his physical footprint (losing weight)
and his carbon footprint (going green) in his laugh-out-loud
self-experimental memoir.
Using his natural storytelling ability, Jeff documents his quest to live
a more earth-friendly lifestyle and lose seventy-five pounds. He is
honest about his innermost secrets-including his struggle with his
weight and obsession with recycling. As he writes about his eating:
"Let me explain my eating disorder to give you an idea what I'm up
against. You can put me in a room. And in that room you have the best
pot in the world, the best coke in the world, the greatest glass of wine
of all time, and a two-day old grocery store sheet cake. Guess where
I'm going? Half of it could be covered in ants. I swear to god. And
I'd eat the other half. I am an addict. And let me tell you, of all
the addictions that are the most unattractive, being a compulsive
over-eater is number one."
A heavyset couch potato who daydreams about his next snack, Jeff dives
in headfirst and begins meeting regularly with a personal trainer,
working with a pilates instructor (who happens to be a former Solid Gold
dancer), using his Wii Fit (at least to weigh himself), working with
environmentalist and actor Ed Begley Jr. to become more green, and even
taking the bus to work (at least for a while).

Harlan Coben
"Caught"
Thursday, March 25 6 PM
@ Borders Back Bay (511 Boylston St., Boston; 617-236-1444)
An explosive new stand-alone thriller from #1 New York Times bestseller
Harlan Coben.
Wendy is a reporter on a mission: She's chasing down the lowest of the
low-sexual predators-and exposing them on national television. Her big
break comes when she nails a child advocate who works with abused and
underserved children. She's there, cameras rolling, when the cops cuff
him and the guy realizes his life is well and truly over. Three months
later, the perp is off the grid, missing and presumed dead after the
father of a victim claims to have killed him. Wendy, proud to have taken
the man down in front of a shocked television audience, has moved on to
the story of a missing girl, Erin, in a nearby suburb. The whole country
is obsessed with finding this child, and Wendy should be well on her way
to journalistic superstardom. Then it all comes unhinged: Wendy gets a
phone call that changes everything. A group of local fathers, out of
work and not above vigilante justice, begins to take matters into their
own hands on Erin's behalf. Secrets long-buried rise to the surface and
Wendy begins to wonder if her assumptions that fateful night three
months ago were based on solid investigative journalism-or if she has
unwittingly been part of a grand manipulation aiming to destroy an
innocent man.
Harlan Coben is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Long Lost
and Hold Tight. He has written seventeen novels, published in more than
thirty-seven languages. His novel Tell No One was a critically acclaimed
hit French film and will soon be made into an American film by Miramax
and Focus Features. Winner of the Edgar, Shamus, and Anthony awards,
Coben lives in New Jersey.
