Sasha Abramsky
"Breadline USA "
Thursday, July 2 7:30 p.m.
@ Women & Children First Bookstore
In the midst of the worst economic crisis since the great Depression, investigative journalist Sasha Abramsky exposes the untold story of America’s hunger crisis. In the tradition of Barbara Ehrenreich, Abramsky combines his own personal hunger experiment with in-depth reportage, and extensive interviews with families who rely on public pantries and food stamps to stave off hunger and malnutrition. In the process he chronicles the near impossible balancing act required for people in the economic margins to secure the food they need to survive.

Barbara Bonfigli: Café Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island
Wednesday, July 8 7:00 p.m.

When Sarah, a thirty-something American transplant to Greece, directs the locals in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, a hilarious adventure ensues. Sarah has her own tempestuous relationships to sort out, but she is guided by her philosophy, “You love who you love.” Witty, evocative, and beautifully written, this novel puts you right in the heart of Greek island life, alive with the sights, tastes and memorable characters that inhabit it. Wine will be served and guests will be introduced to the “Tempestini,” the world’s first summer cocktail based on retsina.

Judith Valente
"Discovering Moons "
Friday, July 17 7:30 p.m.
@ Women & Children First Bookstore
Join us for a party celebrating the newest release from one of our favorite local poets. Valente’s poems are deeply rooted in the everyday world, yet transport readers to a place in the soul, a place C.S. Lewis once described as, “the real, real world.” She is a poet concerned with those moments that telescope the sacred with the ordinary, offer a clarifying vision of what it means to be human, and remind us that we are a part of something larger than ourselves. Refreshments will be served.

Sappho’s Salon: A Provocative Night of Lesbian Diversions
Featuring Riva Lehrer and Emily White, special guest host Kat Fitzgerald
Saturday, July 18 7:30 p.m.
@ Women & Children First Bookstore
$7-$10 suggested donation includes food and wine.
Tonight’s installment of our popular salon night for lesbians and their friends features visual artist and disability rights activist Riva Lehrer, and musical act Emily White. Since 1980, Lehrer’s artwork has been shown in museums and galleries nationally, and she has been a visiting artist and lecturer across the US and Europe. Lehrer’s work is the subject of the documentary, “Self Preservation: The Art of Riva Lehrer,” which has been shown at film festivals around the country. She will be presenting slides of her work accompanied by a personal narrative on sexuality and disability. White’s newest release, “12 Ways to Live,” delves into new territory for the singer/songwriter. While still singing the disarmingly honest lyrics that have made her popular with fans throughout the country, the new album takes on a decidedly more indie approach to her folk/rock style. Tonight’s guest hostess Kat Fitzgerald just may be the hardest working
lesbian in show business. Windy City Times photographer, organizer and host of 4 Women Only and Uncommon Ground’s Open Mic, and spiritual mother of Labrys Chicago (www.labryschicago.com), she’ll regale tonight’s audience with live music between sets.

Stephanie Kuehnert
"Ballads of Suburbia "
Friday, July 24 7:30 p.m.
@ Women & Children First Bookstore
Join us for this special party celebrating the release of Chicagoan Kuehnert’s (I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone) second novel, Ballads of Suburbia. Oak Park high school student Kara helps maintain the “Stories of Suburbia” notebook, containing newspaper articles of the bizarre and tragic from suburbs everywhere, as well as the “ballads” written by her friends -- the heartbreakingly honest tales of the moments when life changes and a kid is forced to grow up too soon. Before Kara could figure out what her own song was about, she had to leave town after a series of disastrous events at the end of her junior year. Four years later, Kara returns to face the music, and tells the tale of her first three years of high school with her friends’ “ballads” interspersed throughout.

Susan Schweik
"The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public "
Wednesday, July 29 7:30 p.m.
@ Women & Children First Bookstore
First appearing in San Francisco in 1867, spreading to Chicago by 1881, and soon appearing in cities across the country, “Ugly laws” set out to prevent “street obstructions;” obstructions not caused by trash or refuse, but rather, people: people with disabilities, injuries, deformities, and even the poor and destitute, all deemed “unsightly.” In her groundbreaking study of ugly laws, Schweik, a Professor in English and co-director of the Disability Studies program at UC Berkeley, draws from a huge range of material to uncover the murky history behind the laws, and their cultural and political relevance, use, and misapplications by academics, activists, artists, lawyers, and legislators, today. Schweik will also be reading at Access Living, a fully accessible building, on Tuesday, July 28. More information can be found at www.accessliving.org.
